Efflorescence is a natural occurrence
which manifests itself as a white powdery film
on the surface of the pavement or segmental retaining
wall. Although unsightly. it DOES NOT compromise
the structural integrity of the product and will
usually disappear over time. Composed mainly of
calcium carbonate, it can be removed by scrubbing
the affected surface with a mild acidic solution
then simply washing it off.
Efflorescence CANNOT be eliminated but can be
minimized. It all starts with the raw materials
that make up the Belgard® product.
Belgard® manufacturing facilities thoroughly
test ALL raw materials for deleterious substances
that can lead to efflorescence BEFORE the product
is even made. But we don't stop there, Belgard®
ensures that the raw materials are then properly
proportioned and assembled in order to maximize
the efficiency of each raw material. And like
a fine wine that needs time to achieve excellence,
Belgard® pavers are never rushed out of the
kiln during the all-important curing phase allowing
for complete cement hydration which aids in minimizing
any potential efflorescence while maximizing color
hues and tones. As a final defense against Efflorescence,
Belgard® products employ state-of-the art
chemical admixture technologies to combat soluble
calcium carbonate from being deposited on the
pavement surface. |
